The short answer is: yes, you can absolutely use them.

To be honest, this topic can become surprisingly emotional. Even within the Zentangle® community, there are sometimes lively debates about who “invented” a particular pattern, who named it first, and whether the original source should always be credited.

I once saw someone present a pattern as her own creation and give it a beautiful new name. The only problem was that many of us had already been drawing exactly the same motif in the margins of our school notebooks back in the 1980s. 😊

And that is really the heart of the matter.

Most so-called “Zentangle patterns” are based on lines and shapes that have existed for a very long time. They are often inspired by tiles, fabrics, wallpaper, lace, architectural details, and decorative art from cultures all over the world.

In fact, I once watched a Zentangle® member explain how he spotted a plastic tablecloth in a shop window, took a photo, and later turned that design into a new pattern with its own name.

Which raises an interesting question: if we insist that every pattern must be credited to the person who first shared it, shouldn’t we also credit the manufacturer of the tablecloth? 😊

And if we credit the tablecloth manufacturer, shouldn’t they in turn credit whoever inspired their design?

If we insisted on tracing the source of every pattern, we would quickly find ourselves in an endless chain of inspiration. A pattern might be inspired by a kitchen tile, which was inspired by a textile, which was inspired by Persian ornament, which was inspired by something carved centuries ago.

At some point, it becomes impossible to say where a pattern truly began.

That is exactly why the patterns in my books do not have names.

To me, giving a pattern a name can sometimes create the impression that it was invented by one specific person. And besides, what should I do if one artist in Germany calls a pattern “Sunny Loops,” another artist in China calls the same pattern “Dragon Dance,” and someone else in Texas decides to name it “Bob”? 😊

Should I list all possible names and add a glossary longer than the book itself?

I’d rather keep things simple.

My goal is not to claim ownership of patterns. My goal is to share a hand-drawn library of patterns that you can use freely for doodling, mandalas, Zentangle®-inspired art, journaling, and countless other creative projects.

What matters most is not who named a pattern first. What matters is that drawing helps us relax, sparks our creativity, and brings us joy.

And that part belongs to everyone. ✨

1. Doodling — The Original Classic

Doodling is probably where it all begins.

It’s what happens when your pen starts moving almost by itself.

You’re on the phone.
You’re sitting in a meeting.
Or you’re doing what many of us did in school: decorating the margins of our notebooks instead of listening to the teacher. 😄

Flowers, stars, swirls, little hearts, and shapes with no particular purpose.

That’s doodling.

2. Mandalas — Circles with Meaning

Mandalas are circular designs built around a central point.

The word mandala comes from Sanskrit and means “circle.”

Mandalas have been used for centuries in Hindu and Buddhist traditions as spiritual symbols representing balance, harmony, and the universe.

3. Paisley — The Elegant Classic

Before Zentangle® became popular, decorative patterns were already everywhere.

One beautiful example is Paisley.

Paisley is the name of that distinctive teardrop-shaped motif you’ve probably seen on fabrics, scarves, wallpaper, and notebooks. The design has ancient roots in Persia and India and became especially popular in Europe during the 19th century.

If you look closely, Paisley designs are often filled with smaller patterns, swirls, and decorative details.

In a way, they are like tiny works of pattern art inside a larger shape.

4. Zentangle® — A Structured Drawing Method

Zentangle® is a registered trademark.

It refers to a drawing method created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas.

The method uses repetitive patterns, specific materials, and a step-by-step approach designed to encourage focus and relaxation.

Within the Zentangle® community, patterns are often given names and shared with step-by-step instructions. But that doesn’t mean the patterns themselves are “owned.”

Zen Doodles, Zendalas, and Other “Zen” Names

Because Zentangle® is a registered trademark, many artists use alternative terms such as:

• Zen Doodles
• Zendalas
• Zen Art
• Zen Patterns

These names are often used for artwork inspired by doodling, mandalas, paisley, and Zentangle®.

As the term Zentangle® became widely known, many people started using it as a general word for relaxing pattern art—similar to how people say “Google it” when they simply mean “search online.”

They are also usually created in a much freer format—not limited to the classic 3.5 × 3.5 inch (9 × 9 cm) tile. Artists may work in sketchbooks, journals, large sheets of paper, greeting cards, or digital art.

No matter what you call your style, patterns are wonderfully versatile.

The borders between Zentangle®, doodling, and other pattern arts are delightfully blurry. Many people confuse Zentangle® with “doodling,” and honestly, that’s okay! Whether you call it Zentangle®, doodle art, or simply “my way to unwind,” the benefits are clear: it’s a way to meditate with your pen, much like drawing Mandalas—but often simpler and less intimidating.

Pattern art, in all its forms, shares many of the calming and focusing perks of Mandala drawing but skips the need for a compass or perfect symmetry. That means everyone—from kids to grown-ups, artists to “I-can’t-draw” types—can join in and feel the creative joy.
